The Trial of Santa Claus

For the 30th-straight year, Santa Claus is facing “trial” as part of the Troop 285 Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge.

San Antonio police will arrested Santa on Thursday as he is handing out gifts at James Bonham Academy. He will be accused of violating a fictitious statute concerning the separation of church and state.

The trial is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, December 9th at the John H. Wood Jr. U.S. Courthouse before U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry J. Bemporad. Members of Boy Scout Troop 285 will make up both the prosecution and the defense teams, and fourth-graders from James Bonham Academy will serve as the jury.

The prosecution has secured a conviction only once in the program’s history (it’s based on “Miracle on 34th Street”).

Coffee Fundraiser

Hello Troop 285,

It’s time for our Fall coffee fundraiser! The same coffee varieties and options of whole bean and ground will be offered to keep it simple, especially for those hopeful repeat customers.

The cost of each bag is $15, $5 of which will go into your scout account for camps and High Adventure.

Sales will start October 23 and order forms will be due no later than Friday, November 3rd. All Money will be due by no later than Monday, November 13th. (I will be out of the country the week of the 6th so that’s why it’s so important to get the orders to me on the 3rd).

Printed flyers are available and a digital copy can be downloaded by clicking on the image below.

As for the order form, please only return a typed version so we don’t have to decipher handwriting. You can use a printed version for notes and to collect information in the field. Email me a digital Excel document with totals of each kind of bean, the grind type and the quantity of each. Please no scans or photos of your orders.

We take cash, checks made out to Troop 285 with “Coffee” on the memo line or you can except digital funds on your personal accounts such as Apple pay, Venmo, etc. and then write a check out to the Troop. (you are responsible for any processing fees).

Delivery should be in mid-November, hopefully before Thanksgiving.

Please email or text me if you have any questions or concerns.

Now let’s sell some beans!

Troop 285 Adult Quartermaster

Lorence Creek Preserve

This site is near the Shadow Cliff Swim & Tennis facility at the intersection of Eagle Grove and Redwoods Crest (78232). The project is to spread some mulch in the area beneath the swing set and some minor tasks. The goal is to spruce up the area for a Pumpkin Patch. This could be a patrol size activity which will require about three hours….start time is 9:00 am.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING FOR THE THREE PROJECT, PLEASE CONTACT Bill McCalister at [email protected].

Colonial Gardens Alzheimers Unit

This is a facility for patients with Alzheimers…..located at 20 Batts Lane (adjacent Harry Wurzbach).

The project is to rebuild five planter boxes made with treated lumber. The facility has been asked to obtain the materials. We promised volunteers to rebuild them and some modest spreading of gravel to improve the walking path. This could be a patrol size activity which will require about four hours work.

Please RSVP here: Colonial Gardens Service Project

Camp Fawcett Service Project

Need dads and older scouts to help build forms for a concrete slab.

See message from Kevin Marquardt…..we need some dads and senior scouts willing to volunteer at Camp Fawcett on October 21. If available, please contact Bill McCalister at [email protected].

Subject: RE: Camp Fawcett Upgrade

Mr. Mac,

My plan is to form the slab, lay the plastic and tie the steel. I think that depending on the people that 285 is sending us, there will probably be enough skills available to get more of the project done. As of tonight, Hardy Hardin is planning on taking his machine out there to dig the beams in the slab. While we are forming and working on that he is going to start digging trenches and laying the pipe. So, I can use some guys to help me form and work on the slab and he could use a couple to shovel dirt and lay pipe.

We are planning on getting there Saturday morning. I will stay as long as it takes to get the slab formed.

Please RSVP for this event through Scoutbook

Wurstfest Festival Fundraiser Opportunity

Every year Canyon Lake Lodge No. 1425, Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons, participates in the Annual Wurstfest Festival on the Wurstfest Grounds in Land Park, New Braunfels. The money we raise goes towards scholarships for our area high schools. The booth is staffed with volunteers from different Masonic groups, Boy Scouts of America, friends, and family.

This year the Festival runs from November 3rd to November 12th.

We have a booth, and we sell burgers, chicken, pork, shrimp, fries, onion rings and an assortment of other food items.

We are always looking for volunteers to work in the booth and we have a lot of shifts still unfilled that we would like to fill.

Please pass this on to your family and friends.

We will make donations to lodges and other organizations that volunteer (Based on the number of shifts and hours worked).

In the past we have had several lodges (and their family members), OES, DeMolay, and Boy Scouts volunteer and this year we are extending the invite to your lodges.

Below is the link to the online schedule. Most shifts are 4 to 5 hours long. Most of the positions are self-explanatory and we will be happy to answer any questions.

If you volunteer, we will provide with a ticket to the festival (before and/or after your shift you are welcome to stay and enjoy the festival).

Free parking and shuttles are provided for all volunteers, and we will feed you anything we sell including the best burger you will ever have!

Since we sell food, you will need to wear a ball cap and possibly a hair/beard net.

If you volunteer, please include Troop 285 after your name.

Thank you for your consideration and we hope we can help any lodge that is looking for fundraiser ideas and provide you with some great advice.

2023 Summer Camp at Lost Pines

Summer Camp at Lost Pines Scout Reservation is one of the top experiences any Scout will have, enjoying a week-long adventure in the outdoors while making new friendships and deepening existing ones with other members of your Scouts BSA Troop. The memories made during camp remain with you for the rest of your life.

When you challenge yourself to a new activity like climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, archery, the mile swim, lifesaving, or others – and SUCCEED – you establish a renewed confidence that will enable you to do your best in school, sports, and other activities when you return home.  After all, if you can repel down a 65 foot tower or hit a bullseye on the shooting range or swim an entire mile at once – there’s nothing you can’t do!

Summer resident camp is provided by the outstanding Lost Pines staff. In addition to the activities noted above, Scouts can participate in a myriad of merit badges and high adventure experiences including: .22 rifle, shotgun, ATV, scuba, action archery, sailing, kayak, stand up paddle board, mountain bike, triathlon, Bike-Athlon, and more. Lost Pines can help your Scouts BSA Troop provide a “mountain top” experience for your annual program.
