For those new families that have been wondering…
What is The Bear Creek Challenge?
The Bear Creek Challenge is a one night campout that will be held on Saturday, September 8th through September 9th at the Bear Creek Scout Reservation in Hunt, Tx (125 Bear Creek Scout Rd W, Hunt, TX 78024).
More importantly, this is a patrol competition designed to test the scouts on their skills, (Orienteering, Knots & Lashings, First Aid, and Cooking). There will be a water event, so scouts should bring swim trunks and a towel.
During the day, each patrol will follow a scheduled rotation to participate in a series of stations where they will be scored by the station leader. There will be individual recognition for the patrol that performs the best at a particular station, but the patrol with the best overall score will be declared the Bear Creek Challenge winner and added to Bear Creek Trophy (look for it in the Scout Lodge)!
Here’s a rough schedule for the day: We will meet at our traditional gathering spot, which is the Brook Hollow HEB. We meet at 7:15am and leave at 7:30am ON THE DOT! From there we will caravan to Bear Creek.
We will set camp shortly after arrival at Bear Creek and have a quick briefing. We’ll have lunch before heading down to the valley to begin stations. Stations will take up the whole afternoon.
The cooking competition begins in the evening. Recognition will be given to the patrols with the best main course and best dessert. Everything must be cooked at camp. We will close the evening with a campfire ceremony, where each patrol will provide a skit for the campfire.
On Sunday morning we will have a Worship Service, present scores, break camp and then head out.
What to bring:
Camping equipment for one night – tent, sleeping bag/hammock. (Don’t overpack)
Camp chairs for comfort
Water. There will be water jugs at each station. Make sure to have at least a 1-liter water bottle and drink LOTS of water.
A sack lunch
A day pack
Swim trunks, water shoes, and towel
Cooking equipment – dinner and breakfast will be by patrol.
A mess kit
Scouts should be in Class B. There is no need to bring Class A uniform to camp.
If you’re just starting out and don’t have all the equipment needed, the troop has some equipment or ask around. There are plenty in the troop willing to lend equipment!
